Meet Heather Scott! A Client Manager in our Aberdeen office who has worked in accountancy since she was 20.
Heather began as an accounts assistant at a small local firm, which was later acquired by SBP in 2018. She has grown through roles from senior to supervisor and now manages a variety of clients, including sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies.
In a recent Q&A, Heather shares what a typical day looks like for her, how she stays organised, and her advice for anyone starting out in accountancy.
Can you introduce yourself and give details on your career history leading to your current role?
I've worked in accountancy practice in Aberdeen since I was 20, starting as an accounts assistant at a small local firm. In the summer of 2018, that firm was acquired by SBP, and I've continued my career with them ever since. Over the years, I've steadily progressed through the roles of senior and supervisor, and I'm now a client manager.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I manage a portfolio of sole trader, partnership, and limited company clients, supporting them with their year-end accounts and tax returns. As a client manager, I am often the first point of contact, so I collaborate closely with other departments such as payroll, VAT, and tax to provide a seamless and professional service. No two days are the same, which keeps the role varied and rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about being a Client Manager?
What I enjoy most about being a Client Manager is getting to see the full picture for each client, from how their business is performing year on year to getting to know the people behind it.
You've worked in several roles within SBP, what experience has been most valuable in shaping your approach to client management?
From assistant level onwards, SBP encourages client contact, which helped me develop strong communication skills early in my career. That experience has been invaluable in shaping my approach to client management. It taught me the importance of understanding each client's individual needs and how we can best support them through clear, consistent communication and tailored advice.
What sets SBP apart when it comes to delivering service to clients in your opinion?
As a medium-sized firm, SBP is well positioned to serve a diverse range of clients while still providing a personal and responsive service. With four offices across the North East, we have strong local knowledge and a clear understanding of the challenges facing businesses in the region.
How do you stay organised and on top of managing multiple client accounts and responsibilities?
Our software package is essential for staying organised. It allows me to view my entire client portfolio at a glance, including individual client deadlines and the progress of each job. I also use a notebook to keep track of tasks. It might seem simple, but there is nothing more satisfying than crossing items off a 'To Do List'!
What advice would you give to someone starting out in accountancy and looking to progress in the industry?
My advice for someone starting out in accountancy is to gain as much practical experience as possible. At SBP, our trainees have the chance to work across several departments, giving them exposure to a variety of clients and different types of work. It is also important to learn from your colleagues as they are a great source of knowledge and support throughout your career.
